How it can look (made-up examples)

  • DCC MARKUP FEE
  • DCC TRANSACTION CHARGES + GST
  • DYNAMIC CURRENCY CONVERSION FEE

What it is

A Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) fee or markup applied when making a currency choice for payment at Point of Sale (POS), online, or ATM environments, such as international transactions or transactions at merchant outlets located in India but registered abroad.

Who charged you

A third party or the card-issuing bank levies charges/mark-up fees for converting the transaction into the home/billing currency.

Is it recurring? How to stop it

  1. At a payment counter, avoid DCC charges by opting to pay in the local currency instead of the home/billing currency.
  2. At an ATM, avoid DCC charges by selecting 'Accept without currency conversion' or choosing 'No' when asked to convert to home/billing currency.

Step-by-step guides:

Questions people ask

Why did this DCC fee appear on my statement?

It appears when you choose to pay in your home currency instead of the local currency. This occurs at Point of Sale terminals, ATMs, or online checkouts with international merchants or foreign-registered merchants located in India.

How much does DCC cost?

The markup depends on your card issuer. For ICICI Bank debit cards, the fee is 1% plus GST until June 21, 2026, and 3.50% plus GST on the markup amount starting June 21, 2026.

Can I get a refund for a DCC charge?

Banks disclaim liability for refunding DCC-related charges. Because the currency choice is confirmed by you at the time of payment, issuers generally do not reverse the fee.

How do I avoid DCC charges in the future?

Choose to pay in the local currency at Point of Sale terminals instead of your home currency. At an ATM, select 'Accept without conversion' or choose 'No' when prompted to convert.

Will this charge repeat?

DCC is applied per transaction based on your currency selection at checkout. If you see repeated fees, check your transaction receipts or bank app statement to review how each payment was processed.
