What it is

An e-mandate facility set up using a UPI application to process recurring payments.

Who charged you

A merchant with whom you established an e-mandate for recurring transactions.

How to find out what it was

  1. Check the pre-transaction notification sent via SMS or email at least 24 hours prior to debit, which contains the merchant name, debit amount, date and time, and e-mandate reference number.
  2. Review the post-transaction notification sent by your issuer, which provides the merchant name, transaction amount, reference numbers, and grievance redressal details.

Is it recurring? How to stop it

This is often a recurring debit, so expect it again unless it is stopped.

  1. Use the modify, revoke, pause, or unpause options directly in your UPI app.
  2. Withdraw the mandate or modify its validity period through your issuing bank at any time, which requires additional factor of authentication.
  3. Opt out of any specific upcoming transaction or the entire e-mandate via your issuer using additional factor of authentication.
  4. Lodge a grievance through the dispute redressal system provided by your issuer.

Questions people ask

Why did this charge go through without a PIN?

Transactions under a registered e-mandate process automatically without requiring a UPI PIN or OTP. These debits also bypass other account limits or controls you may have set.

Which merchant debited my account?

Check the SMS or email notification sent at least 24 hours before the debit, which lists the merchant name and mandate reference number. The post-transaction notification from your issuing bank also details the merchant and reference data.

Will this payment happen again?

Yes. UPI AutoPay is built for recurring debits and will repeat according to the schedule you approved. Mandates set up for NETC FASTag and NCMC auto-replenishment also trigger automatically and are exempt from advance notifications.

How do I stop or cancel a UPI mandate?

Open your UPI app to pause, modify, or revoke the mandate directly. You can also visit your bank app to withdraw the mandate, opt out of an upcoming debit, or change the validity period using an additional factor of authentication.

Is there a fee for using UPI AutoPay?

No. Issuers and payment system providers do not charge fees to customers for using the recurring e-mandate facility.

Can I dispute a mandate transaction?

Yes. You can lodge a dispute through the grievance redressal system provided by your issuing bank. Redressal details are included in the post-transaction notification sent by your issuer.
